These sayings may be mystical, and they may also be very practical.  Consider some modern day examples; how Sri Gandhi and Mother Theresa of Calcutta and many others worked and lived amidst extreme dangers, which certainly would have slain a lessor person.  St. Francis of Assisi provides a Medieval example, and thousands of others are available for study of this topic.
