The tradition of the not-so-developed people to offer food and other gifts to demigods and ancestors is referred to here.  The Lord says that those people bring gifts and sacrifices to the higher powers, not knowing that those powers are in fact God’s presence. God nevertheless accepts the offering because children are not shunned because of their childish ignorance.
