This is an introduction to the ways of the Apostle Thomas, a character hitherto unknown to us.  He speaks in mystical prose, almost at every occasion, and even his acts, and his conduct, speaks of what occupies his being at all times - the mystical Truth.  In this instance he was asked to answer a simple social question, which he does, but what he says is pregnant with much deeper truth and is an allegory which ‘those who have ears’ will hear and others will simply not understand the man fully.
